A Very Short Photo Essay about Costume Con 2008
Group Costume YES:

Group Costume NO:

And finally:

A CHEMISE. HOW HARD IS IT.

(This lady is incredible; she hand-quilted the underskirt for her 18th-century wedding dress, and I don't know if you can see in this picture, but she's embroidered her pocket hoops, which no one will actually see, so she's just hardcore, is what.)

(photos from this dude.)

For the gentlemen who don't give a crap: someday I'll do a post about something incredibly manly. Like...lumberjacking. I promise.

Most of what I know about art I picked up by staring at portraits for their costuming.

Don't you love it? A LOT of beautiful costumes this year, and then always the dozen or so that make me sigh and shake my head. You give costumers a bad name, anonymous person or persons!

Who ARE the people in the second pic -- No no no! I don't want to know. //retinas still smarting

I am not that much into costuming myself (or even wearing dresses), altho I enjoy hearing people talk who know about it, but my God, even I would behave for however long it took to be part of that first portrait. That is really amazing. (Also BONUS, they are not sitting in an incredibly fake studio-lit forest.)

I agree the first costume group is lovely, and they truly deserved to win Best in Show.

But do you recognize the reference from the second group? Their costumes nearly exactly reproduce (within the limits of today's fabrics) the costumes for the townspeople of the Emerald City from the 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz." Even down to the "Metro-Goldwin-Mayer" wardrobe costume tags sewn into the linings of each costume.

Sure, they're silly-looking costumes. But they're supposed to be, and they're meticulously recreated. They also give homage to Adrian, a famous Hollywood costumer (and fashion designer). Being a costumer is about more than just ball gowns and hoop skirts.
